Summer School

Every summer, as part of our transition programme, we run a week long summer school. Summer school is a great opportunity for our incoming students to get to know each other, make friends, get to know staff, and experience the College and everything it has to offer. Each day involves a variety of activities based on the subjects students will study in Year 7. Whether it’s making slime in Science, baking bread in Food Technology, or climbing to new heights on our climbing wall in PE, the activities we choose are designed to be fun and engaging whilst linking to our Year 7 curriculum.

We usually run summer school in the penultimate week of the summer holidays. Each day starts at 9am and finishes at 2pm with a morning break and lunch break when students can access our canteen facilities. We use our own teaching and support staff throughout the week so it’s a great opportunity to get to know the Head of Year as well as subject teachers before students start in September.

A typical day involves four activities spread across a range of subjects; we try to put students with their new tutor group, so they have an opportunity to get to know each other. Each group will have one of our sixth form student volunteers to support them during the week. They will help show them around and be another friendly and recognisable face when they start in September.

We believe summer school is a vital element of our transition programme and encourage all the students due to start with us in September to attend if they can. We do not charge for summer school as we believe it should be available to everybody. To find out more, please contact: awoodcock@thespirescollege.com.
